Many people are familiar with the ubiquitous lemon slice that is served on their glass of water in restaurants. It looks nice and it’s a great way to add flavor to an otherwise bland beverage. However, the benefits of adding lemon to water go far beyond the sensory and aesthetic. It actually carries numerous health benefits.


Alkalizes the Body

The human body functions best when it is in a slightly alkaline state, somewhere between a pH of 7.3 and 7.4. Unfortunately, many dietary choices cause the body to deviate from this ideal range, resulting in metabolic acidosis. It is well-known that health problems become more common under acidic conditions, including cancer, diabetes, heart disease, obesity, over-breathing and hormonal imbalance. Despite lemon’s acidity, adding it to your water is highly effective at restoring your body’s delicate acid-base balance.

Adding lemon to water has been shown to help the body more easily absorb and utilize vitamin C from any source, even supplements. This is an extremely important nutrient for health that does more than boost immunity. It promotes bile secretion, helping your body to break down fats and increasing the availability of vitamins and minerals from food. Lemon also helps you process food in a timely manner, preventing bloating, constipation, gas and acid reflux.


Detoxifies the Liver

Research has shown that lemon is an effective liver tonic. Besides stimulating the production and release of bile, it also helps the liver better perform its cleanup duties. When the liver doesn’t function optimally, waste products and other toxins, like those from alcohol or medications, build up and cause health problems.


Improves Blood Sugar Levels

Poorly-controlled blood sugar levels are a cornerstone for many common health problems. These include diabetes, obesity, poor immunity, low energy and even mood disorders. Fortunately, keeping blood sugar in check can be as simple as adding lemon to your water, especially before and after meals. The acidity of the lemon helps to reduce the impact of carbohydrates on blood sugar, requiring much smaller releases of insulin and preventing fat storage. By this mechanism, it can also aid weight loss.
