An increase in activity with 50,000 more steps each week will encourage a weight loss of five pounds each week, according to published information on Chron.com. If a person walks 10,000 steps each day, then that person will burn 3,500 calories each week. A loss of 3,500 calories is equal to a loss of one pound of fat. Many individuals can lose weight by simply increasing the number of steps that are walked each day.

Number of Steps

A physician should be consulted when designing exercise programs, when adjusting diets and when using prescription medications. The number of steps that are walked each day should be adjusted to accommodate for other health concerns such as high blood pressure or a heart condition. There should be a gradual increase in the number of steps that are walked, especially if there are other health problems. The body must work much harder to carry an excessive amount of weight.

Weight Loss

There are common concerns about weight loss because several approaches can be used to reach an ideal weight. Individuals will choose a goal and then try to select a method such as with exercise, diet supplements or by consuming fewer calories. The major problem for someone who is trying to lose weight becomes apparent with exercises because the extra weight places more stress on the joints and muscle groups. Individuals who try to reduce the amount of calories for a meal may experience problems from hunger.

There are devices that can be worn to record the number of steps that have been walked. The pedometers may be carried in a pocket or worn on a wrist. Individuals can set the devices to correspond to the length of their strides, which will more accurately reflect the length that has been walked. The length of the walk may be important during a race, such as a marathon race, but has no impact with regard to the loss of calories. The number of steps that have been walked will reflect the number of times that the body has exerted enough energy to walk a step and to cause a loss of calories.

Weather Conditions

The steps can be walked inside a home or outside during excellent weather conditions. Individuals could simply walk around in a circular pattern on a living room floor while also watching a movie. The pedometer will record the steps and can be used to determine when the sufficient number of steps have been walked. The device eliminates the need for walkers to count the steps and helps to reinforce the process by permitting individuals to measure their activities.

Individuals can walk and place less stress on their bodies than would have occurred from lifting weights. The weight loss may be a slower process with walking but there are fewer risks of injuries. An article on Prevention.com reports that walking is more versatile because walking is not limited to a specific location such as a gym.
